We often imagine spiritual devotional practices within quiet, controlled and autonomous settings. The “Lent Lines” series began as a mother’s determined pursuit
to mediate on God’s word in the midst of chaotic care for her two small children.
During Lent 2018, the artist daily meditated on passages through the gospel of Luke in
a modified process of Lectio Devina (Divine Reading) of God’s word while changing
diapers, filling cereal bowls and facilitating toddler life. The process involved
prayerfully reading a small section of scripture (chapter or less), then “listening” for a
word or phrase that stood out. This snapshot word/phrase would stay in mind, be
mulled over and meditated on while accomplishing other chores. As time allowed,
imagery that came to mind would be sketched on her daughter’s manila paper
(initially). and eventually led to more formal renderings of the work, paintings
and other successors of the process.
