In October, I participated with my local church in hosting a fall festival in a lower income neighborhood in Denver. I created a fishing booth where the kids cast poles over and received bags of popcorn with fish I had drawn. Though the kids had a great time, there was a tension in that the “hosts” of the event were mainly white individuals that didn’t live in the neighborhood. When I brought the piece back into the gallery, I created labels for the popcorn bags stating “I’m helping you”. I wanted to recreate that tension felt by myself and (most likely) the parents of the kids.
